Brad Whitford’s Aerosmith 1980s Gadden Travel Guitar, Tim Collins! (#54)
Here’s a cool piece of story that includes a key piece of Aerosmith’s long and checkered history. The Gadden Travel guitar is exactly as described, an ingenious, quality, compact guitar that was small and light enough to travel with comfortably. It even came with a bracket that allowed the user to attach a Rockman to the body and have an entire functioning rock rig in one tiny package. The guitar shows obvious signs of use.
What is extremely interesting about this piece is the “Collins Management” laminate that is attached to the handle. These tags were attached to all of the bands traveling gear and luggage that was to be delivered to their hotels. The “5” on the back indicated it belonged to Brad and that it was to be delivered to his room. Any faithful Aerosmith fan knows that Tim Collins is credited with orchestrating “one of the most dramatic comebacks ever in rock”. He joined Aerosmith as their manager in the early 1980s when the band was crumbling. He is credited with reuniting the band, getting them into rehab, getting them signed to Geffen records and fulfilling his belief that he could make them into the biggest rock band in the world. He remained Aerosmith’s manager until 1996.
