Hal Blaine Pearl Set
In the early 1980s Hal Blaine entered an endorsement agreement with the Pearl drum company, and they supplied him with this five piece MLX set in a White Marine Pearl finish. The drums were the state of the art, with all maple shells and heavyweight hardware. The set includes a 22″ x 16″ bass drum, 12″ x 10″, 13″ x 11″, and 16″ x 16″ toms with a 14″ x 6.5″ free-floating brass snare.
The bass drum displays Blaine’s legendary “Hal Blaine Strikes Again” logo, which was copied from a rubber stamp Blaine used to identify sheet music he had played on. The bass drum also features a calfskin batter head, muffled with a piece of foam weather stripping attached in an amoeba shaped pattern.
Blaine compared playing his Pearl set to driving a Cadillac, while his old Ludwigs were more like driving a Mustang. The Pearls were big, strong, and powerful while the Ludwigs were smaller, lighter and more nimble.
In most instances Blaine used the set with only one 13″ mounted tom as seen in the second photo.
